In conclusion, Paul goes back to the issue of circumcision that prompted him to write this letter to the Galatians. He emphasises that by insisting that the Galatians observe the law and go through circumcision, the Judaizers were trying to make a good impression for themselves. However, they were only being hypocritical since they themselves were not even succeeding in obeying the law (Galatians 6:12-13).
By their insistence, they were downplaying the importance of the cross of Christ, which Paul preached was the only thing worth boasting about (Galatians 6:14). Our focus should never be on the externals – circumcision or uncircumcision. Either is not the issue. “What counts is a new creation”, living life by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ who fulfilled the demands of the law on the cross (Galatians 6:15).
“The marks of Jesus Christ” (Galatians 6:17) is the brand of Christ’s ownership, the scars left on Paul by incessant beatings, prison chains, etc. (see 2 Corinthians 11:23-25). Paul is Christ’s slave and wholly owned by Him. But to return to the slavery of circumcision and legalism, never!
